story identification - 80's/90's movie: man and woman driving through a red desert planet

I am trying to identify a sci-fi movie from the 80's or 90's, with the following parameters: Setting: Scenes of a red desert planet Culture: Either people roam fairly solo and try to acquire resources to survive, or you live in a weird society where if a stranger is captured he needs to play in a game of fight to the death. Mobility: One foil character has a giant battle-bot-looking tank as his form of transportation through the desert. Protagonist has a car that has a plastic half bubble on top to look out from. Robot: The protagonist runs around in the beginning of the film with a female robot/android whose face is melted off after it has acid touch its face.(This scene happens next to the protagonist's rover) Love interest: Somehow protagonist comes across female protagonist in desert. She smells really bad and is hungry. They sleep outside, and he tells her to sleep away from him. He uses a thermal blanket(the first I ever saw in my life). She wakes up next to him, smel

Why isn't Buffy a star athlete?

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer's third season finale, we get this dialogue from our heroine: Buffy : I wish I could be a lot of things for you. A great student, a star athlete ... remotely normal. I'm sure we can all sympathise with Buffy's wish to please her mother, but it makes me wonder...why can't she be a star athlete? As the Slayer, Buffy is "naturally buff", with strength, agility and reflexes naturally greater than average with little need for her to work out. These attributes would surely be of enormous use to an athlete. So why didn't she get involved in school athletics? We saw several times that Principal Snyder gave extensive privileges and excuses to his star athletes. See the swim team getting away with sexual assault in Go Fish , and Snyder coercing Willow into doing Percy's work for him. We also had several incidents showing the high social status of athletes at Sunnydale High. Obviously, out of universe Buffy was supposed to be a soci

story identification - Trying to recall series of novels set in palaeolithic Europe with time travel from near present

I read this series in the 80s I think. It was set in the Stone Age or earlier. There was the usual disparate band of youngsters but who had time travelled from the near future. Think there was a reality show theme to it. One or more had increasing telekinetic powers. The climax of one of the books was a was the breaching of a the straits of Gibraltar leading to the formation of the Mediterranean. Answer As mentioned by @eshier this the Saga of Pliocene Exile by Julian May The Saga of Pliocene Exile (or the Saga of the Exiles) is a series of science / speculative fiction books by Julian May, first published in the early 1980s. It consists of four books: The Many Colored Land, The Golden Torc, The Nonborn King and The Adversary . At the start of the story the Strait of Gibraltar is closed and the Mediterranean Sea is dry and empty. The Many Colored Land and The Golden Torc are set in Europe just before and during the rupture at Gibraltar. The rupture and the rapid filling of the Me

story identification - Need help with the title of a old scifi book

I know someone trying to remember the title of an old book but they can only describe it as this ... The “protagonist” is a member of a spherical alien race. They use needle thin “jets” of liquid for locomotion and defence. The beginning of the story shows how the protagonist grew up on his home world, amongst his fellow aliens. They spent a great deal of time trying to avoid their natural predators, a race of scorpion like aliens, that distended their stomachs outside their bodies to digest prey. There was a third race of armoured plant-like aliens also living on the world. The second half of the story see the “protagonist” leave his home world and team up with a human… and highlights the clash between the two very different physiologies. (for example… the alien uses the word “food” as a swear word as it is a disgusting concept to him… given he derives energy from sunlight and built in chemical process)

the lord of the rings - Was Gollum evil?

Some of the questions I've read here recently have discussed Gollum, his behavior, the nature of the Gollum/Smeagol dynamic, and his manner of speech, among other things. But though many of these questions and answers come close to dealing with the issue of Gollum's personal nature, none address it directly. And thus I have to ask the question myself. According to Tolkien- in The Hobbit , Lord of the Rings , his letters, or whatever other sources you can find- was Gollum/Smeagol evil, either inherently, or after some point in his life? Or was he simply weak, and therefore easily corrupted by the Ring, but not truly evil? I know Tolkien addressed this issue, and specifically said that Gollum had a chance at redemption. This chance came just before he led Sam and Frodo into Shelob's lair. For those who don't remember, Frodo is asleep, his head in Sam's lap; Gollum had wandered off alone some time earlier. Gollum returns, sees the two hobbits sleeping, and his expre

What were the Terminator's instructions following termination of Sarah Connor?

Was the Terminator instructed to lay low after completing its mission and reunite with SkyNet? Maybe there were secondary missions? Blow itself to smithereens to avoid contaminating the timeline? Answer The Terminator had no way of knowing when he killed the right Sarah Connor, so he would go on killing them. After he exhausted the names in the phone book, he would hunt Sarah Connors in other ways. Some women would not have a separate listing in the phone book; their husband's name would be listed or they could have an unlisted number altogether. These women can be found using other public and business records--- driver's licenses, marriage licenses, birth certificates, credit reports and so on. So the killing spree would continue until the Terminator ran out of legitimate targets. Woe to any woman named Sarah who decides to marry a man named Connor; she's liable to be killed on her wedding day as the tireless and remorseless Terminator continues its mission. Woe to any S

history - Why this year in Valerian?

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets starts with this awesome montage [embedded content] showing humanity's progress through a series of peaceful handshakes as vessels and space stations rendezvous and their crews meet and shake hands. The initial footage is from the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and then proceeds through sequences in 2020, 2031, and 2150 with various Earth and Galactic cultures meeting in peace. Now, my question is about the dates selected. This montage is clearly crafted to draw the viewer into the setting and make it appear connected to our present day rather than some arbitrary distant future or place (cf. Star Trek and Star Wars ). Yet the station depicted in 2020 is clearly far beyond what we'll have in the immediate future, so the connection is broken (for me). So, do we have any commentary on this choice? Does the date have a significance in the comics? Is it not supposed to be our future? Is there some other explanation? Answer In short,

harry potter - In which year did Dumbledore become headmaster?

In which year did Dumbledore become the Headmaster for Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Answer Although the generally accepted date is 1956 (e.g. presuming that Minerva McGonagall replaced Dumbledore as Transfiguration Mistress on his appointment to Headmaster) there's a fair argument that he didn't actually become Headmaster until late 1964/early 1965 . We know from the latest release on Pottermore that Minerva McGonagall was appointed as Dumbledore's assistant in 1956 but not as his replacement. There's no canon description of how long she worked under him but we can reasonably assume it would take quite a few years to go from a 21-year-old trainee to full Mistress at Hogwarts; She sent an owl to Hogwarts, asking whether she might be considered for a teaching post. The owl returned within hours, offering her a job in the Transfiguration department, under Head of Department, Albus Dumbledore. [ Pottermore website ] Lupin was born in 1960 and didn't

harry potter - How did Dumbledore gain the loyalty of Fawkes?

How did Dumbledore find Fawkes. Did Dumbledore have Fawkes even when working as a Transfiguration teacher or acquired it after having Headmaster position. They both have a very strong bond between them. When did Dumbledore gain this. Update : Dumbledore says that Ollivander wrote to him when Harry's wand was purchased; if Dumbledore did not have Fawkes before 1938, he would not know about the two feathers being in the wands, so Fawkes and Dumbledore must have met and bonded before 1938 “My wand's feather came from Fawkes?” Harry said, amazed. "Yes,” said Dumbledore. “Mr. Ollivander wrote to tell me you had bought the second wand, the moment you left his shop four years ago.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire, Chapter 36-The Parting Of the Ways. Update 2: JKR says that Dumbledore was the only owner of Fawkes. So it is to be believed that Fawkes was a wild Phoenix before its bonding with Dumbledore. Peter Humphreys for BBC Newsround: Who did Fawkes previously belong to a

story identification - What book features dragons, song-driven magic, and talking otters?

Read these books when I was a youth and loved them. I haven't been able to remember what they were at all for years. The details I do remember are this: They had talking Otters who raised the main character (a young boy). The dragons were lost or nearly extinct and the young boy had to bring them back. In order to do their magic they had to sing or play music. Every search I do on Google for these criteria just get me the books by Christopher Paolini about Dragons and those are not what I want. Answer NightPool , by Shirley Rousseau Murphy and published in 1985 by Harper & Row, first book of the Dragonbards series. Injured in battle with the Dark Raiders, sixteen-year-old Tebriel is healed by a colony of talking otters and sets out to fight the Dark and its forces of evil in the world of Tirror.

star trek - Why does Tom Paris get Starfleet rank, but the Maquis get provisional rank?

Once Voyager is stranded in the Delta quadrant Janeway gives Tom Paris the rank of lieutenant, and he gets two little pips on his collar. Janeway gives the Maquis crew including Chakotay rank on board, but all of them get provisional pins on their collar. Why would Tom Paris get an official rank, but the Maquis get provisional rank? Answer While researching this answer, I found that there's a bit of a discrepancy between Paris's pips prop and the dialog in " Caretaker ", so there's two possible answers: The "Caretaker" script is canon The dialog in "Caretaker" indicates that Paris was , in fact, granted a field (provisional) commission and not a full commission: JANEWAY: I've entered into the ship's log on this date that I'm granting a field commission of lieutenant to Thomas Eugene Paris. Congratulations. If this dialog is to be considered canon, Paris's pips are just a production mistake. Paris's pips are canon If the p

stargate - Is there a timeframe that needs to pass before you can get shot with a zat gun again without dying?

So right now I'm up to season 6 in Stargate SG1, and I've noticed the main crew gets zapped with a zat'nik'tel A LOT. Shouldn't they be dead by now? I thought the second shot kills and the third causes the body to disappear. Did this change somewhere? Is there a period of time where if you don't get shot it wont kill you?

star wars - Is Jyn Erso based on Jan Ors and/or Kyle Katarn?

Jyn Erso from Rogue One seems to have several similarities to Jan Ors and Kyle Katarn , both of whom are Legends status characters. Jyn Erso and Jan Ors comparison: Their names sound similar; "Jan" vs "Jyn" and "Ors" vs "Erso", it's almost the exact same name They are both young, female, humans They both have affiliations with the Rebellion They both help steal the plans for the first Death Star Have the filmmakers or Lucasfilm commented about any inspiration for her character? Is she based on Jan Ors? Is she based on Kyle Katarn? Or maybe both?

a song of ice and fire - Did this Game of Thrones character cause the previous king to go mad?

Spoiler alert! If you haven't seen 6th season episodes, you might want to avoid reading any further. We know (or strongly suspect) that Bran Stark caused Wyllis/Hodor to become mentally ill by warging into him back in time. Could the Three-Eyed-Raven have warged into (or spoken into the mind of) the Mad King Aerys? He could have tried to warn Aerys about the white walkers and encouraged him to burn the white walkers. This led to Aerys going insane and saying "burn them all". Is there anything from the books which help answer that question? Answer No there is no such evidence in the books or any mention of it. Why, you ask? Because: Fire's ineffectiveness against Others Melisandre said: "Necromancy animates these wights, yet they are still only dead flesh. Steel and fire will serve for them. The ones you call the Others are something more." This implies that Others can't be killed by normal fire and steel. Also in Battle of the Fist of First Men , we sa

marvel - Why doesn't Professor Xavier use Wolverine's healing power to fix his legs?

Why hasn't Professor X used Wolverine's DNA to heal his spine, or whatever injury caused him to be unable to use his legs. If Stryker can put DNA (with powers) into anyone, why doesn't Professor X, who is a much more intelligent person with an unlimited budget, do the experiment? He is friends with Wolverine, after all. Answer I haven't followed the X-men or New Mutants (or any related groups) for quite a few years, but I remember that near the beginning of the New Mutants, Professor X was irritated at his inability to walk, as his body was fine; it was nothing more than psychosomatic pain that kept him from walking. As possibly the most powerful telepath on earth, that was rather frustrating and confusing to him. He was later able to walk; how long it lasted is unknown to me, as I stopped reading around then.

the lord of the rings - What Happened to Mordor After Sauron's Defeat?

The Lord of the Rings Wikia notes the following about Mordor following Sauron's defeat: After the ultimate defeat of Sauron, Mordor became mostly empty again as the orcs inside it fled or were killed. Crippled by thousands of years of abuse and neglect, but capable of sustaining life, the land of Mordor was given to the defeated foes of Gondor as a consolation, as well as to the freed slaves of Nurn who were formerly forced to farm there to feed the armies of Mordor. [MORDOR - LOTR WIKIA] Besides the Nurn, who else received ownership of Mordor following the War of the Ring? As well, was Mordor ever decontaminated, or was it just too poisonous and toxic after thousands of years of evil to ever be recultivated? I'm looking for a canon answer, meaning the actual novels or any of J.R.R. Tolkien's supplemental books, papers, or letters. Answer The canon source is, I believe, taken from a preliminary draft of The Steward and The King chapter of RotK. A notable visitor to Mina

game of thrones - What companies does Dany command in Meereen?

Warning: This question contains spoilers from A Dance With Dragons . Danaerys takes Meereen and establishes her claim over it, as well as feeling a sense of protectiveness for the people she has freed there. During her stay and also along her path to get there, many people flock to her cause, most of whom are companies of sellswords or similar armies. It seems like there are a lot, and I'm having a difficult time remembering who they all are. Please provide a break-down of who her companies are . Bonus - name their leaders and approximate sizes as well. The ones which I know so far are: aaaaaaaaand my mind goes blank after those! I know I'm venturing into list territory here, but I am convinced that this list is limited. Answer List of companies under command of Daenerys is covered in the Appendix of "A Dance With Dragons". Check "The Queen across the water". You can also check it online under the section of her captains and commanders her captains and

harry potter - What does it mean that a Wizard is more powerful than another?

When wizards are dueling, if they both know how to cast the Killing Curse, then what is the meaning of one being more powerful than the other? Specifically, we are repeatedly told how powerful Voldemort is. What exactly does this mean? Except for his Horcruxes, he should be no more advantaged in a duel. PS: This question is not a duplicate. Its essence is that being able to cast a killing curse is the epitome of magical power in duels, and so Voldemort should not have become anybody special. Answer POS has the best answer to this question, though its universe is not the same as canon. In POS, people can’t just keep casting spells. Most people will get completely exhausted if they cast two killing spells in a row, or keep holding up a Protego (especially in the face of attacks). I think canon is plain dumb in regards to magical power.

comics - Why was Superman made practically physically invulnerable?

Everyone knows Superman is physically invulnerable to pretty much anything except kryptonite. To my mind, this makes for a fairly dull superhero because it takes a lot of danger out of the comic. I was wondering if Jerry Seigel or anyone involved with Superman had explained why they made this decision? Answer Superman was, and even to this day, never completely invulnerable. His powers when he first became a character in the newspapers back in 1939 were: Leaping one-eight of a mile Nothing less than a bursting shell could penetrate his skin Strong enough to lift an automobile of the time, cleanly over his head he had no superhuman visions, senses or ranged abilities While this was sufficient for the comic for a while, it became a problem for the Superman when he became a radio play character and even more so when he became animated during the early 1940s. The Fleischer & Famous Superman animated shorts are some of the finest cartoons of the period. During this time, Superman be

Why didn't the *characters* rebel or run in Never Let Me Go?

I have just seen the film "Never Let Me Go" . I couldn't understand why the clones didn't try to escape. Even if they were angry at their fate they didn't try to alter this. Were they genetically conditioned to be submissive? Was it some form of conditioning or was there an explanation in the book which doesn't make it to the film? There was a scene early on where a ball falls outside the ground, and it indicated that the children were scared to leave, but as adults they enjoyed more freedom. I would have thought that they would at least think about it. (In universe explanation). Answer This was discussed (extensively) in an interview with the film's director. Apologies for the huge blob of text. One of the consistent questions people have about the film is, "Why don’t they run away?" What would your answer be to that? Maybe it’s a failing of the film that the question comes up as often as it does – I don’t know There are many ways to answer t

the force awakens - Why couldn't the shield protecting the Death Star be penetrated at the Battle of Endor?

In The Force Awakens... Han Solo gets Finn aboard the Star Killer base by effecting a light speed jump to within its shields, which succeeds completely - they seem to be undetected and able to carry on with their mission. However, in the Battle of Endor there is an elaborate plan to eliminate the Death Star II's shields by attacking the shield generator on Endor before Lando can fly the Falcon into the heart of the Death Star II to lead the attack on the central reactor. Why couldn't they have just used the same approach as Solo does in TFA? I am unconvinced its an enhancement to the Falcon since none is mentioned, and indeed Solo just comments "you won't like it" when asked how he is going to accomplish the feat in TFA, so I assume its a simple technique. Some mention of "fractional shields" is mentioned, whereby the Star Killer base is protected against anything slower than light speed, but this just opens up the question of why not use a light speed w

star trek - Why are the holodecks on Voyager in use if they have energy issues?

I'm watching the first two seasons of Voyager and various episodes have commentary on having energy limitations -- but we constantly see crew using extremely complicated holodeck simulations. Why would they allow use of the holodeck if they need to conserve energy? Answer The holodecks on Voyager run on an independent power source. This can be seen in the season five episode Night , when main power is suppressed yet the holodeck continues to run. For whatever reason, this power source doesn't appear to require any significant amount of fuel: SEVEN: Independent subsystems are operational. Environmental controls, holodecks. Reroute power from this holodeck to the emergency relays. PARIS: Yes, ma'am. No luck. The hologrid is frozen. In the episode Parallax , there was even a time when Janeway suggests trying to use the holodeck to provide additional power, which Kim shoots down as not possible due to a system incompatibility; JANEWAY: What about alternative energy sources

Has the Star Wars universe caught up to our time?

Star Wars is set "a long time ago", but I know there have been an expanded universe. Has that universe's time caught up to our time line yet? Answer The only answer I can find is what I call a Lucasism . In other words, it's a situation that was developed to fit, as one person called it, The Rule of Cool , without regard for fact or science. Once it's been created and fit into official canon, then there's a lot of rationalization to explain it, so, in the long run you end up with more explanation than cool. In the end, I feel like there's a lot of contradictory facts, but then again, this is the Lucasverse. (I'm not going to focus on what has already been stated or proven in other questions on SE:SF&F, but I will summarize.) Star Wars takes place (everybody say it with me), "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." The problem with "long time ago" and "far, far away" is that these are loose terms. Any other gala

Are there cats or creatures similar to cats in the Star Wars Universe?

I wonder if cats or creatures similar to cats exist in the Star Wars Universe. And if yes, what are these creatures, like humanoid cats or more like predators like tigers etc? Or are there any references that some species had cats or something else as pets? Answer Yes. (However, we see mentions rather infrequently, and from the source list on Wookiepedia, there may not be any Disney-level canon. I'm not sure if the species mentioned below appear in Disney canon or not) From the Star Wars wikia page on cats : A cat was a type of domesticated animal that made vocalizations that sounded like "meow." Ken occasionally wished he possessed a cat or a dog instead of his pet mooka, Zeebo. The spukamas was a common housecat on Corellia. The pittin was another domesticated cat-like creature, as was the felinx. Like cats, they came in many colors and enjoyed batting at strings. Reekcats were another species. There were also several sentient feline species in the galaxy, such as th

How do people in the Matrix develop a residual self image that resembles their own body?

As we know people born in and connected to the Matrix retain a residual self image. Morpheus told Neo: Your appearance now is what we call residual self image. It is the mental projection of your digital self. Freed people that hack back into the Matrix keep that projection and do not change it at will (see: Did People Within The Matrix Always Resemble their Real World Bodies? ). But here's the question: How do people born (or grown for that matter) in the Matrix develop a residual self image that resembles their own body in the first place? You simply do not know how you look if you never saw yourself. It would therefore require that the Matrix feeds your brain with a mental image based on your real body thus requiring some scanners (or whatever) inside the tank to obtain ones features within the goo. That leads to the more important question as to why would the machines go through all this trouble to provide "proper" residual self images for their connected humans? Th

harry potter - How Did Ginny Weasley Set the Basilisk on Muggleborns Without Getting Killed or Petrified?

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , Ginny Weasley carries out Tom Riddle's plan by proxy and apparently leads the Basilisk to attack four Muggleborns and Filch's cat Mrs Norris in the castle. ‘Ginny Weasley opened the Chamber of Secrets. She strangled the school roosters and daubed threatening messages on the walls. She set the serpent of Slytherin on four Mudbloods, and the Squib’s cat .’ ‘No,’ Harry whispered. ‘Yes,’ said Riddle, calmly. ‘Of course, she didn’t know what she was doing at first ...’ Chamber of Secrets - page 229 - Bloomsbury - chapter 17, The Heir of Slytherin How was Ginny able to direct the actions of the Basilisk without using her sight (so the Basilisk wouldn't be able to look her in the eyes), or without being killed or petrified herself? Side note: Tom Riddle described Ginny as being in "a sort of a trance" while she was carrying out Riddle's orders -- would this make her more or less aware of the dangers of the Basilisk? ★ I

online resources - Is there a place on the internet where I could find actual Star Trek episode scripts?

Through the years I have purchased a few Star Trek scripts. I even have a DS9 script a buddy of mine mistakenly took off set and dazzled me with at Christmas years ago. As neat as those are to own, they are impossible to search. Is there a place on the internet where the Star Trek show or movie scripts can be obtained in digital format? (Sometimes I remember a quote and would love to find it. From time to time the internet delivers. Occasionally it does not. I want to have a resource to find quotes as I think of them.) Answer Yes: Chakoteya , a fan-made but very reliable site. From the site's front page: This is your one-stop site for who said what and when on televised Star Trek and Doctor Who. These pages have been created for educational and entertainment purposes only, and the content is decided entirely at my whim. They are not here for you to copy onto your own website, so kindly respect that and just link in. Chrissie, the site runner, has produced transcripts for all epis

harry potter - Can you create more Polyjuice Potion using hair/clippings from your own transformed self?

If you were to take Polyjuice, then clip hair from yourself (so it would essentially be the hair of the person you transformed into), could you create more Polyjuice to transform into that person using that hair? Answer Barty Crouch Jr. kept Mad-Eye Moody alive in his trunk to find out information about Moody's behavior as well as have a continued supply of hair from him. This implies either that Barty Crouch Jr. is unaware that such a thing is possible, or that he knows it wouldn't be so he ensured he'd have a supply of hair that would actually work. “Then I packed up Moody’s clothes and Dark detectors, put them in the trunk with Moody, and set off for Hogwarts. I kept him alive, under the Imperius Curse. I wanted to be able to question him. To find out about his past, learn his habits, so that I could fool even Dumbledore. I also needed his hair to make the Polyjuice Potion.” - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 35 (Veritaserum) In addition, Barty Crouch Jr. d

harry potter - How could students be allowed to take such a dangerous detention as the Forbidden Forest?

In The Philosopher's Stone (aka The Sorcerer's Stone ), Harry and Draco are sent to Forbidden Forest with Rubeus Hagrid, the games keeper. We know that the Forest is a pretty dangerous place — why would Dumbledore allow that dangerous of a detention assignment? I know why it was needed for the plot development, but it sounds unlike Dumbledore. Answer It sounds just like Albus. He knows Harry must one day defeat the Dark Lord. He knows that the Dark Lord is alive and someone or something is drinking unicorn blood. He knows the trio (or more likely just Harry, the other two are a bonus) must get to the Mirror of Erised, past Fluffy. He knows Harry is being bullied by Malfoy. He knows that unless he toughens Harry up, he has no chance. The whole experience, with the centaurs, the unicorn blood, hearing about Fluffy (which may have happened earlier, but lets assume Albus wants to be sure Hagrid blabbers), seeing Quirrel, seeing Malfoy run, was intentional. It's almost as t

story identification - 90s fantasy book: man can access a parallel medieval world while 'dreaming'

I read a book in my high school library back in the late 90s and pretty sure it was written in the mid 90s. I can't remember the author or title. The setting is current to the 90s mid-west. But it also takes place in an alternate medieval style fantasy world that only certain individuals can go to via falling asleep. The main character is a gas station attendant in his early 30s, whose father left or died and he inherited a storage container full of odd stuff. For as long as he can remember he has had these real dreams where he is a monk at a monastery scribing books. He has no knowledge the dreams are actually a real world, that he's part of a family who can travel between the worlds. Those that can travel between the worlds also possess binary magic, it uses opposites: life/death, fire/water, strength/weakness etc. The main character discovers that he can use life/death. Two strangers save him from the monastery, a woman using strength/weakness and her son who uses fire/water

star wars - Why is C-3PO kept in the dark in Return of the Jedi while R2-D2 is not?

In Return of the Jedi , the beginning sequence shows C-3PO and R2-D2 making their way to Jabba the Hutt's palace. They are sent there to bargain for Han Solo's life. When the negotiations with Jabba begin, R2-D2 shows him a message from Luke Skywalker. In that message he offers the two droids as gifts in exchange for Han Solo. To which C-3PO says: C-3PO: You're playing the wrong message! So C-3PO is obviously very surprised that Luke has just said this. Then, on Jabba's barge, we see a plan play out that Luke Skywalker has already put in motion. [embedded content] We see C-3PO bump into R2-D2 and warn him that they are about to kill Luke and that they might be next, but R2-D2 says something which C-3PO responds to by saying: C-3PO: I wish I had your confidence. So this just reinforces that R2-D2 was in on the plan as he was also preparing Luke's lightsaber to launch it in the air to where Luke was on the smaller craft. The only way for this to have played out was if

star wars - How to pronounce Mos Eisley?

For several months I've been a regular participant in this site's chatroom , Mos Eisley . But I've never seen Star Wars , so I don't know how to pronounce the name! Is it " moz ice-lee " or " moss eyes-lay " or something else? PS. If it makes a difference, I speak British English. PPS. Anyone who DVs me for not having seen Star Wars will get a revenge-DV if they haven't read Wheel of Time ;-) Answer Just listen to Obi-Wan: [embedded content] Let's say it together now: "moss ice-zlee".

What is the offensive distribution between the stardrive and saucer section on a Galaxy class star ship?

I am wondering about the combat effectiveness of the saucer section of a Galaxy class starship is compared to the stardrive section. I know that the saucer section can sustain a warp field but not generate one. I don't know if it can change direction. I also do not know how crucial warp drive is in combat, I think they combat generally happens at impulse. So, what I would like to know is: what the distribution of phasers and torpedo launchers is and if know what their angle of fire is(do either of the sections have blind spots they cannot fire in). Do both sections have comparable shielding? Is the stardrive section more or less manoeuvrable on its own? Additionally, I see basically three reasonable situations where you would separate the ship: 1) To have multiple vectors of attack, 2) To leave non-essential personal behind and 3) You need to do a crash landing. I have seen 2 and 3, but I am not sure I have seen a combat situation using both sections on a Galaxy class before. Is mu

Which Harry Potter works are considered canon?

There are many different Harry Potter works including: books short stories movies card games video games toys amusement parks web content Which ones are considered to be canon? Answer As Stu Wilson said, there's no "official corporate position" of JKR on the topic; so the exact hierarchy of canonicity is somewhat subjective and personal. Having said that, I would like to offer what my personal preference is, together with objective explanation of why that order was chosen. (For other commonly accepted opinions, see @ibid's answer ) Pottermore. This is more canonical than interviews for 3 reasons: A. Interviews are spur of the moment things where JKR may say something off the cuff. She made mistakes in interviews before. Pottermore is "official" content she spents time to think through. B. Much of Pottermore content is much newer than a vast bulk of JKR interviews. C. JKR officially noted in 2012 that Pottermore is currently a replacement for her originall
