harry potter - Who gets Muggle-born students onto Platform 9 3/4?

Who gets Muggle-born students onto Platform 9 3/4 ? Their parents can't pass through the magical wall (I suppose). Harry only gets onto the platform by good fortune in his first year after bumping into the Weasleys. How do the rest of the Muggle-born students access the platform? Answer Well, I do remember that in the Chamber of Secrets, Hermione's parents were in Diagon Alley with her. That clears the air around muggle-born students' parents being able to be in the magical world. And remember how in the same book, Dobby sealed the opening! Maybe it has a special opening for muggle parents? There's probably some kind of way that muggle parents are granted a special permission so that they are able to go with their children. EDIT : Also, the seventh book talks about Lily and Petunia having an argument on Platform 9 3/4 (in Snape's memories). Petunia is a Muggle, yet she was on the Platform! Lily and Petunia's parents are also mentioned later. So yes, it is pos...

star wars - What, specifically, are the "Whills"?

I know what the Journal of the Whills is, but I haven't found a lot of information as to their nature, such as where they came from, what they're capable of, or, most importantly, what they actually are. Are they deities, or are they the pinnacle of being connected to the Force, or are they the next (or final) step for those who become Force ghosts? Are they Force itself? I've oft-heard people refer to the "will of the Force," so that makes me curious if it's actually their will. ** I feel that it is important to mention that there is a common misconception that Yoda is a Whill. George Lucas has strongly denied this. Yoda's race is a mystery to fans, as far as I am aware, as Lucas has not revealed it yet. Answer The existence of the Whills, or their journal is currently only mentioned in one canonical source: a brief quote from the Journal of the Whills in the opening of the novelization for The Force Awakens . All other previous mentions (in prior nov...

harry potter - What changes have been made to Hogwarts throughout the series?

The question Does the exterior appearance of Hogwarts really change throughout the series? merely addresses the fact that Hogwarts does indeed change depending on what movie you're watching. I want to know what changed . I'm looking for more examples of what all changed ( visual comparisons , before and after, etc. are encouraged). As many specifics as feasible would be greatly appreciated!

marvel - How does The Incredible Hulk change mass?

When Dr Bruce Banner becomes The Incredible Hulk he increases in height and presumably weight. My question is - how does that mass increase occur? I'm looking (obviously) for an in-universe explanation. Answer Jeff Parker , the current writer of Marvel Comics' Hulk , replied to this question via Twitter by saying: The explanation I use: during transformation he pulls in ambient gamma energy and converts it to mass. So that's the reasoning that Jeff Parker uses when he writes the Bruce Banner Hulk.

story identification - SF short that I read in 1987

I'm trying to find a story that we read in class back in 1987. The story has two soldiers that find themselves pitted against each other, but separated by some kind of force field or line or something like that. At the end of the story, the protagonist defeats his opponent and crosses the force field to inspect his kill. While looking down at it he's disgusted and repulsed by its physical form. It's then that the reader realizes that the story is being told from the alien's POV and not the human's because he says something to the effect of, "It doesn't even have scales." The whole class was just blown away. When you're a little kid it's incredibly difficult to see something from someone else's perspective so this just messed with us. I'd love to read this with my son. I've often wondered if it was something published in those weekly school magazines, but I just can't be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

story identification - A man takes riskier and riskier jobs (involving a transportation ring) for more money

I'm looking for a story I read in 1980. It is a short story and may have been in one of Asimov's or Bradbury's collections. It was about a man looking for a job. He goes into an office with, I believe, a help wanted sign on it. Inside is a beautiful woman and a robotic(?) filing cabinet. He is allowed to state what the risk he is willing to stake for the job. The odds are his chances of coming back alive (1:1 = %50) The woman is a secretary and she asks him what odds he would like. He asks for one with a great chance of return, something like a 1000:1. The filing cabinet spits out a listing and she gives him a vague description. He takes the job. She gives him a ring and says if you want to return just press the center of the ring and you'll be transported back immediately. So he arrives at his new job and instantly he is mobbed by the indigenous creatures giving him buckets of their money. He didn't like it so he goes back and asks what it was all about, the secret...

star wars - How are the Jedi Perceived by Citizens of the Republic?

I've seen, in the movies and The Clone Wars , some reactions from "normal" citizens to the Jedi, but I'm wondering how they were seen overall by most people in the Republic (or New Republic, as well). Do people see them as some kind of legendary beings, as rescuers, or are they like the police, where some respect them and others see them as "The Man," and resent their interference? Or are they so far removed from most people that they know more about them from rumors and speculation? Is there anything in the Extended Universe about how any different groups or populations perceive the Jedi or anything showing a "prevailing" view that seems to pervade larger groups? I know there's one a "one size fits all" answer, but it seems to me so much of Star Wars is shown to us through the eyes of the Jedi, that I'm wondering what the SW universe and what the Jedi seem like to those outside that group, even if it's just the view of a few...
