How was Harry supposed to reply to his first year's letter from Hogwarts?

As a follow-up of this question (quote stolen from the answer with bolded text from me) Dear Mr Potter, We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July . Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall Deputy Headmistress Assuming that the Dursleys were not complete jerks - they just explain Harry that he is a wizard and stuff. All good and nice but ... how is Harry supposed to get an owl and answer? The Dursleys cannot buy him one even if they wanted to. Muggle-born students get a visit from a Hogwarts staff member, who explains the situation but this does not seem to be the case. Harry just received a letter. He cannot use the same owl that delivered the letter because the first letter was delivered like a normal one in the mail box. Answer Harry is a bit of a special case, since he was born to a witch and w...

harry potter - Why Couldn't a Time Turner Have been Used to Stop Voldemort?

With the use of a time turner, that opens a whole "Pandora's Box" of possibilities. While the use of one can be problematical, when the Ministry of Magic found out how dangerous Voldemort was, why didn't they simply use a time turner to go back and stop him before he became dangerous? (I know this does open a lot of plot holes, but witches and wizards don't seem to worry about laws of science, so it would seem strange that magic that seems to easily supersede laws of physics (like brooms that fly without propulsion) would worry about the problematical issues of time travel.) Answer This is specifically discussed in the Pottermore moment " The Time Turner ". In short, time-turners cannot be used to affect major changes without incurring dire (but unspecified) consequences . Using them to remove someone as important as Voldemort would, presumably result in massive ramifications: Even the use of the very limited amount of Time-Turners at the Ministry’s di...

Is there a reason Herbert used the name "Jesus Lewis"?

In the (lesser known, non-Dune) novel The Jesus Incident one of the character's name's is "Jesus Lewis". We learn in an important scene that it's normally pronounced in the Spanish style (i.e. "Haysoos") when Ship pronounces it in the English style (i.e. "Geezus") and this surprises a character. Frank Herbert is well known for playing word games with character names in all of his works. ("Irulan" and "Noah Arkwright" are two of my favorite examples.) Did he give any explanation for using the name "Jesus Lewis" other than the connection to the biblical Jesus (and a connection at the end of the book which I won't give away)? Answer I like Izkata's comment so much I'm going to repost it as a real answer. It seems to be word play on Jeez Louise . I believe this is just the kind of weird name logic that Herbert would have used, considering the character.

Can Captain Marvel break the fourth wall?

In Captain Marvel it would appear as if Carol can break the fourth wall. First, we have the "knowing smile" she gives after Stan Lee's cameo in the film which directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck acknowledge as her breaking the fourth wall without stating in those terms. At one point, her eyes fall upon an elderly man conspicuously reading a _Mallrats _script. It's Stan Lee, practicing his lines for his cameo in that other movie. "Trust me, true believer," he mutters to himself. You can watch that entire Mallrats scene below: The Captain Marvel scene was originally written by directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck as just another fun, funny appearance by the comics legend. But after his passing in November, the filmmakers felt compelled to update the sequence to acknowledge the "gravitas" of the moment. "Instead of just the pure laugh we had, we had a little bit of a smile from Captain Marvel in response to it, and she kind of breaks character...

harry potter - Did Bellatrix really love her husband?

In harry potter, Bellatrix is one of Voldemort's most beloved and loyal Death Eaters. Voldemort even trained her himself. "trained in the dark arts by the dark lord himself" She is married to Rodolphus Lestrange, but (as far as I can find) never shows any affection towards him. She shows much more interest in Voldemort. one of the best examples I can find of this is : " 'My Lord... my Lord...' It was Bellatrix's voice, and she spoke as if to a lover." and then: "Voldemort seemed to be getting to his feet. Various Death Eaters were hurrying away from him, returning to the crowd lining the clearing. Bellatrix alone remained behind, kneeling beside Voldemort." and a few lines later: " 'My Lord, let me. . .' 'I do not require assistance," said Voldemort coldly, and though he could not see it, Harry pictured Bellatrix withdrawing a helpful hand. "The boy... Is he dead?' " So, did Bellatrix really love her husb...

In previous issue #0, even Hope suspected that she would be upcoming host of Phoenix. How does everyone know about it? Answer It's heading for Hope as she's already hosted the Phoenix force 1 . It's also after Omega-level psionic mutants, we know this because of how the Phoneix force came back after it's first visit to earth 2 The Phoenix Force returned to Earth when it felt the mind of a human transcend the physical realm, a mind that resonated with the Phoenix Force's energy .
